LAXEY signs agreement for the delivery of Marel processing equipment and software for a new land-based salmon slaughterhouse. The agreement marks a significant step in LAXEY’s ambition to produce 32,000 tons of salmon annually.
The first phase of LAXEY’s aquaculture facility, in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland is already completed with the first batch of smolt transferred to the facility at the end of 2024, with the first harvest scheduled for the autumn of 2025. As a global leader in the development and production of equipment, software, and services for fish processing, Marel is excited to support LAXEY in their growing endeavors.
LAXEY invests in processing equipment and software
Land-based aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the food industry. Robust equipment is crucial to meeting the market’s increasing demands for sustainability and maximum efficiency.
To provide LAXEY the precise size grading and optimal operational efficiency they need, the agreement includes Marel’s Smartline Grader and AXIN software, both widely used in fish processing facilities worldwide. AXIN software provides access to real-time data, enabling and supporting decision making that continuously improves production processes. The software enables the staff to optimize production efficiency while quickly responding to potential issues immediately. The software solution enhances grading accuracy and supports traceability and product quality—key elements of LAXEY’s strategy to become leaders in sustainable land-based aquaculture.
“Having a clear overview of the processing, strong traceability, and the ability to ensure efficiency at all stages of production is incredibly important to us,” says Kristmann Kristmannsson, Processing and Procurement Manager at LAXEY.
Advanced technology for greater value
Marel’s Smartline Grader provides LAXEY with the ability to size-grade salmon with high precision and speed. Working in tandem with AXIN software, all production data is traceable in real-time, giving the company insights to maximize raw material utilization and ensure food safety. “Our customers want reliable data, high-quality products, and technology that can predict their production line’s status,” says Skúli Sigurðsson, Vice President of Fish at Marel. “We are proud to collaborate with LAXEY on this project and support their journey to set new benchmarks in aquaculture.”
